Engineer

1. Since joining Scouting Robotics, participate in at least 10 separate Lab/Team events that include people from outside your Lab. Of these events, at least three must be a tournament where your Team competes with your robot against other teams. These events do not include Lab or Team meetings.

2. After completing Apprentice requirement 1b, hold the same position of responsibility at a subsequent tournament, implementing the lessons learned from Apprentice 1b to improve your performance. After the tournament, have a discussion with your leader to reflect on your experience.

1. Describe the tools and processes that your Team uses to manage projects, tasks, and workflow.

2. Be the designated leader for a team project or task that will be completed by a group of 3–5 Team members over the course of 3–5 hours of Team meetings. Meet with your leader to develop a plan; call and lead a brief meeting; explain each person's role; monitor group progress; deliver the completed work product on or ahead of schedule, or communicate with your leader ahead of the deadline if on-time delivery is jeopardized.

3. After completing 2b, discuss the experience with your leader, reflecting on your successes and challenges in leadership.

1. Demonstrate safe and proper use of the following tools; explain the purpose of all the controls on each tool: bandsaw OR reciprocating saw OR chop saw; sanding station OR grinding station.

2. Following a paper part drawing provided by your leader, and using appropriate measurement, marking, and machine tools, demonstrate the following skills on a piece of metal: cut the piece to the specified length; locate and mark the center of a hole; drill the hole to the specified diameter; clean and debur the part; measure the finished part to ensure features are within tolerance.

3. Use CAD software to create a 3D model of the part you fabricated in requirement 3b.

1. Demonstrate the following skills with a set of digital or dial or vernier calipers: Zero the calipers; Measure outside diameter, inside diameter, and wall thickness of a length of rigid tube or pipe; Take a measurement using the depth probe; Clean and properly store the calipers.

2. Use the internet to find the data sheet for a robot component your team uses, and to figure out what it means. Explain to your leader 5 pieces of information from the datasheet, including at least two pieces of information for which you needed to research the meaning.

1. Using the language from Apprentice Requirement 5a, write a program that prints the numbers from 1 to 100. But for multiples of three print "Fizz" instead of the number and for the multiples of five print "Buzz". For numbers which are multiples of both three and five print "FizzBuzz".

2. Using the language from Apprentice Requirement 5a, write a program that prints the even numbers from 1 to 100. Then modify one line of the program so that it now prints the odd numbers from 1 to 100.

3. Describe strategies for troubleshooting and debugging programs. Tell which strategies were most helpful to you as you completed 5b and 5c.

1. Tell what precautions must be taken for a safe swim.

2. Demonstrate your ability to pass the BSA beginner test: Jump feetfirst into water over your head in depth, level off and swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming, then return to your starting place.

3. Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.

4. Explain why swimming rescues should not be attempted when a reaching or throwing rescue is possible. Explain why and how a rescue swimmer should avoid contact with the victim.

1. Demonstrate bandages for a sprained ankle and for injuries on the head, the upper arm, and the collarbone.

2. By yourself and with a partner, show how to: Transport a person from a smoke-filled room; Transport for at least 25 yards a person with a sprained ankle.

3. Tell the five most common signals of a heart attack. Explain how the symptoms of a heart attack are different in men and women. Tell how you would respond if you witness someone in cardiac distress.

4. Tell what utility services exist in your home or meeting place. Describe potential hazards associated with these utilities and tell how to respond in emergency situations.

5. Develop an emergency action plan for your home that includes what to do in case of fire, storm, power outage, and water outage.

6. Explain how to obtain potable water in an emergency.

1. Participate in a school, community, or lab program on mental health challenges commonly faced by adolescents, including anxiety and depression. Discuss your participation in the program with your family. Report to your Scoutmaster or other adult leader about what you learned, including what resources are available to you when you or a peer need mental health support.

2. Explain what choices you can make in your daily life to protect yourself from, or to combat, mental health challenges.

3. Share your challenges and successes in following the physical fitness plan and meeting the goals you created in Novice requirement 6b as part of your daily life.

4. Share your challenges and successes in following the lifestyle fitness plan and meeting the goals you created in Apprentice requirement 7b as part of your daily life.

1. Visit and discuss with a selected individual approved by your leader (for example, an elected official, entrepreneur, or STEM professional) the importance of technology and innovation in our society.

2. Investigate a sustainability issue affecting your community. Share what you learned about that issue with your Team or Lab. Tell what, if anything, could be done by you or your community to address the concern.

3. Visit and discuss with a STEM professional approved by your leader, and working in a field that interests you, their education and career pathway and the importance of their work.

4. Participate in three hours of service through one or more service projects approved by your Scoutmaster. The project(s) must not be the same service project(s) used for Novice requirement 7b and Apprentice requirement 8e. Explain how your service to others relates to the Scout Law.

5. Tell someone who is eligible to join Scouting Robotics, or an inactive Scout, about your Scouting Robotics activities. Invite this person to a tournament, activity, service project, or meeting. Provide information on how to join, or encourage the inactive Scout to become active. Share your efforts with your Scoutmaster or other adult leader.

1. Demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Tell how you have lived four different points of the Scout Law (different from those points used for previous ranks) in your everyday life.

2. Demonstrate Gracious Professionalism by living the FIRST Core Values. Tell how you have lived two of the FIRST Core Values (different from those points used for previous ranks) in your work on your Team.

3. While working toward the Engineer rank, and after completing Apprentice requirement 11, participate in a Scoutmaster conference.

4. Successfully complete your board of review for the Engineer rank.
