FIRST teams operate much like professional workplace teams to complete complex projects with multiple components, dependencies, and tight deadlines. Project management systems are essential tools for keeping work and timelines organized. In this Tech Crest you will learn about the project management system used by your team, and you will lead teammates to complete a project.

1. Learn your team's project management system:
1a. Identify your team's project management system and show that you have, at minimum, access to view tasks and projects.
1b. Explain how tasks and projects are organized in the system.
1c. Explain what labels exist to organize projects.
1d. Explain who has the power to create and assign tasks.
2. Demonstrate key system features:
2a. Show how to label tasks as not started, in progress, and completed.
2b. Show how to view a timeline of tasks.
3. Explain and demonstrate dependencies:
3a. Explain three types of dependency in project management.
3b. Show how dependencies are indicated in your team's project management system.

Leading a Project

4. With your trainer, select an available incomplete task that you can become the leader of. Select a task that can be completed in approximately one week of team meetings. Assign yourself as the leader in the project management system.
5. Recruit a team of at least two other people to complete the project and assign those individuals to the task in the project management system.
6. Create a project plan that includes timeline, deliverables, roles and responsibilities, and a plan of work. Review your plan with your trainer.
7. Conduct a launch meeting with your project team where you explain the project plan and answer questions before your team begins work on the project.
8. Actively manage and support your project team as it completes its work. Provide guidance, encouragement, and maintain communication among project team members and with other leaders on your robotics team as appropriate.
9. When the project is complete, deliver the product to the appropriate team leader, and if the work product is acceptable, mark the project complete.
10. Following project completion, meet with your trainer to reflect on your performance as a project leader. Make note of lessons learned for your next project.

An earned Tech Crest™ will not be retroactively invalidated if the requirements change after completion.
