Personal
Growth
Process
A structured framework designed to help youth navigate a series of surmountable technical and personal obstacles. By planning their own progress and moving at an individualized pace, members build the self-confidence necessary to tackle increasingly complex engineering challenges.
This process is not an end in itself, but rather a vital method to fulfill the broader mission of Scouting Robotics: developing personal character, ethical leadership, and technical competencies. It functions as a personal growth system where youth progress through progressive steps, fostering a level of commitment that encourages lifelong engagement.
Four Key Pillars
The foundations that make the Personal Growth Process work.
Experiential Learning
True growth comes from "learning by doing". While theoretical knowledge is important, a Robotics Scout truly masters a skill—such as leading yourself, leading others, or technical skills—only through consistent hands-on practice, teaching others, and receiving mentorship.
Integration
Personal growth is most effective when it is woven directly into the team's program. Simply participating in robotics workshops and lab sessions leads to natural achievement and a readiness for more sophisticated technical experiences.
Skill Retention
After a technical requirement is met, Robotics Scouts are placed in practical environments, such as competitive tournaments and teaching roles, to ensure their skills are retained through repeated use.
Mentorship & Community
While the journey is personal, it is never solitary. It is a collaborative effort supported by adult mentors, family, and peers, creating a sense of belonging through shared technical adventure.
Rank Progression
Four progressive ranks. Each one builds on the last.
Robotics Scout
Start with values. Start building.
This is where the journey begins! Participants learn the core values of Scouting Robotics, how the lab and teams operate, and the basics of safety, tools, and engineering. The focus is on curiosity, teamwork, and building a strong foundation for future learning.

Novice
Learn the tools. Learn the team.
Novice participants jump into hands-on learning. They practice using tools, working with electrical systems, writing basic programs, and preparing for events. Along the way, they develop teamwork, responsibility, and safe work habits while learning how a robot—and a robotics team—works.

Apprentice
Build smarter. Solve bigger problems.
At the Apprentice level, participants strengthen their technical skills and begin taking on meaningful roles. They fabricate parts, measure and build accurately, explore robot mechanisms, and contribute actively at competitions. Problem-solving, improvement, and learning from experience are key themes.

Engineer
Lead the team. Engineer the future.
The Engineer rank focuses on leadership and advanced skills. Participants lead projects, mentor others, manage time and resources, and apply higher-level engineering and programming concepts. They set the example for teamwork, service, and Gracious Professionalism in everything they do.
View RequirementsHow it Works
Progress is self-directed. Advancement is earned.
-
Learn by Doing
Scouts work directly on their robotics team, completing hands-on requirements naturally as part of normal practice and competition activities.
-
Demonstrate Mastery
Each requirement must be demonstrated to a leader or peer mentor. Knowledge alone is not enough — scouts show what they can do.
-
Earn the Rank
Complete all requirements, participate in a Scoutmaster conference, and pass a board of review to officially advance to the next rank.
-
Give Back
Advanced scouts mentor newer members, reinforcing their own skills while building the next generation of Robotics Scouts.
